Use And Abuse of Science.

Today, science is synonymous with life, influencing every aspect of our existence. Mechanization has turned humans into robotic-like beings. Our activities, our actions, even our thoughts are scientific now. We are today gods as compared with our ancestors of few thousand years back. The forces of nature that once filled our ancestors with awe and fear have now been harnessed to serve us instead of ruling over us. Rains, floods, diseases, epidemics, no longer frighten us. We do not consider them god but simple phenomena of nature which can be made to serve us or which can be avoided easily.

Science has shrunk the world, making time and distance nearly irrelevant. We can see, hear, and speak from incredible long distances. Vast oceans, great deserts, dense forests are no impediments in the way of travelling across them. Travel by land, sea, and air has become easier, more comfortable, faster, and safer. About a thousand miles an hour is a common thing. We can now travel beneath the sea, through the air, across land, and even millions of miles through space.

Internet, Computer, Communication satellites, Aeroplanes , Submarines, Ocean liners are some of the marvels of modern age which have revolutionized travels, communication and life styles. Man has reached the Moon many times! Lunar landings will soon become a thing of the past. Human unmanned space crafts have already landed on mars. Cinematography , photography, television , made life delightful, entertaining .

The discoveries and inventions of science have also brought relief to the suffering humanity. They have enabled physicians to combat diseases or to prevent them. Diseases were formerly regarded either as inflictions of some demons to be exorcised or acts of god for which penitence and prayer were recommended. Science has now shown that a malady is as definitely due to a particular cause, preventable or otherwise, as any other effect in this world. Scientific inventions have brought more food, more drink and more clothing to humanity , fields are now more scientifically cultivated than they were before, better types of manures have been found out by scientists and better husking and reaping machines are now in use.

However, there is another side to the picture as well. Science has its darker aspects as well. Sophisticated weapons of war- tanks, bombs, destroyers, atom bomb, hydrogen bomb etc. have wrought havoc on the world and caused innocent people to suffer from these atrocities of ferocious aspects of science. It can be said that science has not made life peaceful rather it has made life more hasty, hurried, worried, restless.

Summing up, it can be said that like everything, science also has its brighter and the darker aspect but doubtless even their staunched pessimist cannot help confirm that gains we have gained from science outweighs the losses, uses outnumber the harmful aspects.
